Title |
LANCUM-D75984: Early Roman fragment of Samian ware vessel |
||
Description |
English: Large body fragment of a Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period. Decorated body sherd with frieze and ovolo border remaining. Dragendorff Form 37. The originally dark red slipped is very worn/abraded and has turned black in places, looking charred, which probably indicates that the vessel was burned. The breaks look worn, but not burned which would indicate that the vessel broke after burning and either during deposition or just before recovery (cliff fall). This sherd does not join LANCUM-D701F3 and D74336, but it most certainly comes from the same vessel. Its decoration is similar to that of LANCUM-D6C883, but this sherd is in much better condition than the other one. The decoration consists of one arch with a naked male winged figure below. The ovolo (egg-and-tongue frienze) border is composed of small arches terminating in stars. |
