Title
LANCUM-D5F2F6: Early Roman fragment of a Samian ware vessel
Description
English: Large fragment of a Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period. Undecorated bottom sherd with most of the pedestal foot ring still remaining. The originally dark red slipped has turned black/greyish in parts which probably indicates that the vessel was burned. The breaks look worn, but not burned which would indicate that the vessel broke after burning and either during deposition or just before recovery (cliff fall). The vessel still carries part of the potter's stamp in the centre of the inside: MALLIAC[M?]. This potter worked in the Lezoux area in Gaul probably between c. AD140-190.
