LANCUM-C0A225: Early Roman fragment of Samian ware
Description
English: Large fragment of a Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period. Decorated rim sherd with very worn pattern which is almost unrecognisable. Probably ovolo (egg-and-tongue-border) and top part of larger frieze. Its dark red/greyish surface colour on obverse, reverse and breaks indicates that it was broken and burned before deposition. Part of a Roman cremation. Possibly Dragendorff 37. Even though this fragment is very worn it could have belonged to a vessel of which we have at least twelve more sherds (see below).
