Title
LANCUM-73D3B1: Roman fragment of Samian vessel and crude lead repair
Description
English: Large cast lead-alloy repair piece, still attached to a small piece of Samian ware, dating from the Roman period, c. AD43-410. Lead repairs for Samian dishes were not uncommon in Roman times. Samian dishes were imported from e.g. Gaul and, though not irreplaceable, were certainly precious enough to be repaired rather than thrown away. Some lead staples are small and unobtrusive, but this one was very chunky and may have tried to hold together two larger sherds or part of a larger vessel.
