Title
LANCUM-17EA00: Roman Samian ware vessel fragment
Description
English: Base sherd of a Roman Samian ware dish or shallow bowl, probably dating from the earlier Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-200. The sherd comes from the raised pointed centrepart of the dish with the central raised point still visible at one edge (see image). The inside is plain, but the outside shows remains of a personalised graffito which was less skillfully etched into the surface of the bowl. The sherd probably comes from a Samian bowl type Dragendorff 18/31 or 15/31, both of which are common dishes or shallow bowls and have this typical raised domeshaped base.
