Français : Ceci est une photographie prise à l’Aire Marine Protégée (AMP) de Joal-Fadiouth, un site exceptionnel situé à environ 130 kilomètres de Dakar, la capitale du Sénégal. Cette aire protégée s’étend sur une vaste superficie de 174 kilomètres carrés, englobant une diversité impressionnante d’écosystèmes marins et côtiers.

Le lagon de l’AMP de Joal-Fadiouth est particulièrement remarquable pour ses zones humides, qui jouent un rôle vital dans la préservation de la faune aquatique. Parmi les espèces protégées, on trouve notamment la tortue marine, une créature emblématique de ces eaux, et les vastes étendues de mangroves. Ces mangroves ne sont pas seulement cruciales pour la faune locale, offrant un habitat et une zone de reproduction pour de nombreuses espèces de poissons et d’oiseaux, mais elles jouent également un rôle fondamental dans la protection des côtes contre l’érosion et les tempêtes. En effet, les racines des mangroves stabilisent les sols et réduisent l’impact des vagues, contribuant ainsi à la résilience des communautés côtières face aux changements climatiques.

Cependant, cette richesse naturelle est fragile. Depuis plus de deux décennies, la surexploitation des ressources de l’AMP de Joal-Fadiouth a mis en danger cet écosystème précieux. Pour contrer cette menace, le Ministère de l’Environnement, du Développement Durable et de la Transition Écologique du Sénégal déploie d’importants efforts pour préserver ce patrimoine naturel national. Le gouvernement a mis en œuvre des mesures de conservation rigoureuses et a su répondre aux recommandations émises lors du Cinquième Congrès Mondial des Parcs de l’Union Internationale pour la Conservation de la Nature (UICN), qui s’est tenu en septembre 2003. Ces efforts visent à assurer la protection et la durabilité de l’AMP de Joal-Fadiouth pour les générations futures, tout en soutenant les communautés locales qui dépendent de ces ressources pour leur subsistance.
English: This is a photograph taken at the Joal-Fadiouth Marine Protected Area (MPA), an exceptional site located about 130 kilometers from Dakar, the capital of Senegal. This protected area covers a vast expanse of 174 square kilometers, encompassing an impressive diversity of marine and coastal ecosystems.

The lagoon within the Joal-Fadiouth MPA is particularly notable for its wetlands, which play a vital role in preserving aquatic wildlife. Among the protected species are the marine turtle, an iconic creature of these waters, and the extensive mangrove forests. These mangroves are not only crucial for local wildlife, providing habitat and breeding grounds for numerous fish and bird species, but they also play a fundamental role in protecting the coastlines from erosion and storms. The roots of the mangroves stabilize the soil and reduce the impact of waves, thereby contributing to the resilience of coastal communities in the face of climate change.

However, this natural wealth is fragile. For more than two decades, overexploitation of the resources in the Joal-Fadiouth MPA has endangered this precious ecosystem. To counter this threat, the Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development, and Ecological Transition of Senegal has been making significant efforts to preserve this national natural heritage. The government has implemented stringent conservation measures and has responded to the recommendations made at the Fifth World Parks Congress of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), held in September 2003. These efforts aim to ensure the protection and sustainability of the Joal-Fadiouth MPA for future generations while supporting the local communities that depend on these resources for their livelihoods.
