English: From article by O. Rygh ["New additions to the University's collection of antiquities, 1876"]: "A small round vessel of burnt leather (reddish colour). Measures 6,2 cm across, 2 cm thick. At the top, remains of a broken spout, next to it traces of two more broken protrusions, that may have attached to the spout further up, forming loops that could be used for carrying the piece with string. The depiction is the same on boths sides, and is obviously imprinted with a stamp in the wet leather. (...) The piece is certainly from the Middle ages, but its provenance is uncertain. Nothing certain is known of its early history, except that it was found in the ground in Norway, possibly by Dikemark in Asker parish, Akershus county." |
