Commentaire historique:

Le colonel Luigi Pianciani, proscrit italien, à Jersey, était administrateur du journal "L'Homme". A ce titre il fait partie de ceux qui sont frappés par l'expulsion après la publication de la lettre hostile à la Reine Victoria, qui par contrecoup provoquera l'expulsion de Victor Hugo. Pianciani quitte Jersey le 17 octobre 1855. Les vers de la dédicace évoquant l’errance, on peut penser que c’est au moment de son départ que Victor Hugo lui a offert ce dessin.
