Illustration de la revue : Le tour du monde, montrant la commission française à son arrivée à Han-Kéou en juin 1868 à la fin de la mission dont le but était d'évaluer la navigabilité du Mékong (départ de Saigon en juin 1866 - retour en juin 1868)


Le chef de l'expédition du Mékong était le capitaine de frégate Doudart de Lagrée (fin connaisseur du Cambodge et parlant le khmer) Le lieutenant de vaisseau Francis Garnier était le second, il était chargé des relevés hydrographiques et géographiques Le Dr Thorel était chargé de la botanique Le Dr Joubert était chargé de la géologie Louis Delaporte était chargé des dessins, des croquis de voyage et des relevés archéologiques. Louis de Carné était le seul civil du groupe, il était chargé du compte-rendu officiel

Le dessin est d'Emile Bayard, effectué d'après une photographie prise à Han Kéou en juin 1868 à la fin de la mission.

Les membres de la commission française, qui paraissent épuisés, ne sont plus que cinq car le chef : le commandant Doudart de Lagrée vient de mourir à 46 ans, c'est le lieutenant de vaisseau : Francis Garnier (28 ans) qui a pris la tête de la commission.

Cette gravure a été réalisée à partir d'une photographie car à l'époque il n'était pas possible d'imprimer une illustration à partir d'une photographie.
