Jean Warin, autre graveur en médailles, secontinue la beauté de cet art. Jean Warin, né à Liègeen 1604, mourut à Paris en 1672. Il vint sétablir àParis, dès sa vingt-quatrième année et, désormais, ilne quitta plus cette ville où, le succès obtenu par unemédaille de Louis XIII et par une autre de lui-même,lui valut dêtre nommé garde et conducteur de laMonnaie royale. La réputation de lartiste se pour-suivit avec une série de commandes faites par Riche-lieu et parmi lesquelles se détache la célèbre médailledAnne dAutriche tenant dans ses bras Louis XIVenfant. Jean Warin, à qui lon doit aussi le premier sceau delAcadémie française et un beau buste de Louis XIII(fîg. 91), appartint à lAcadémie royale de peintureet de sculpture dès sa fondation, et son fils, François,lui succéda comme tailleur général des monnaies deFrance. Dupré et Warin ont glorieusement illustré lart dela médaille à lorigine. Leurs chefs-dœuvre sont LA DLCORATION, LA SCULPTURE 137

Leurnom clôt brillamment ce chapitre plutôt aride de lasculpture, aune époque de transition. Plus les sièclesreculent, plus ils semblent emporter, dans la maréedescendante des souvenirs, le plus grand nombre desartistes, et nous devons nous contenter dénumérerceux dont les œuvres ont résisté à loubli. Cependant, à cette heure stagnante ou, mieux,recueillie, le déchetest relatif; nous ne sommes plusaux beaux temps de la Renaissance où les artistesétaient innombrables, tellement innombrables, même,que, malgré leur énumération très incomplote, nousnavons que lembarras du choix. Il est vrai que lesiècle dapothéose de Louis XIV nous dédommagerade la présente pénurie, mais aussi, à ce moment-là, lasculpture marchera de pair avec larchitecture, et,larchitecture monumentale, celle qui favorise le pluslessor de la décoration scul
