Sur l’île Notre-Dame, aux jardins des Floralies, la sculpture de Michel de Broin se présente comme un arbre dont la cime plonge dans le sol. Ainsi, elle forme une arche, enracinée à chacune de ses extrémités. L'œuvre, réalisée en béton et en acier inoxydable, s’intègre harmonieusement au contexte verdoyant du parc Jean-Drapeau. Bien que disparu, Allende reste aujourd’hui une source d’inspiration féconde, notamment pour toute la communauté chilienne résidant à Montréal. Pour l’artiste, il fallait marquer la vivacité de cet héritage par la figure de l’arbre dont la puissance des racines évoque l’importance de la transmission, reprenant en cela la métaphore horticole utilisée par Allende lui-même dans son dernier discours : « J’ai la certitude, disait-il, que la graine que nous sèmerons dans la conscience et la dignité de milliers de Chiliens ne pourra germer dans l’obscurantisme. Ils [les militaires] ont la force, ils pourront nous asservir, mais nul ne retient les avancées sociales avec le crime et la force. L’Histoire est à nous, c’est le peuple qui la construit 1 . » 1.
