La signification de ce tableau est ambigüe car la jeune femme tient un masque de la main droite et une grenade de la main gauche. Le masque lui permet de changer son apparence et de simuler un personnage différent d'elle-même, pour séduire, pour jouer ou tromper un éventuel partenaire. La grenade est depuis la haute antiquité, un symbole de fécondité, ainsi la déesse Hera des anciens grecs est souvent représentée avec ce fruit à la main. L'association de ces deux éléments dans les mains d'une jeune femme incite à penser que l'artiste a voulu rapprocher féminité, simulation et tromperie. |
