Rocher sculpté appelé "l'Ascèse d'Arjuna" (ou la Descente du Gange) à Mahabalipuram en anglais : Arjuna's Penance Au fond à gauche, les colonnes sont celles du "Krishna Mandapa". Le bas-relief, sculpté au VIIè siècle sur le promontoire de diorite, représente l'Ascèse d'Arjuna. Il mesure 27 m de long et 9 m de haut. Il était situé à proximité du palais des rois Pallavas et de nombreux temples monolithes sculptés dans cette zone rocheuse. Arjuna, héros majeur du grand poème épique : le Mahâbhârata, est un des cinq frères Pandavas, il est le plus valeureux d'entre eux. Il personnifie le Pouvoir de Vérité. C'est en réalité le modèle du guerrier et du souverain. Dans le bas-relief, il est représenté en ascète dans une pose yogi, debout sur une seule jambe et les mains au-dessus de la tête. Dans le Mahâbhârata, Shiva, après l'avoir mis à l'épreuve dans un combat, reconnait les mérites d'Arjuna et lui donne son arme favorite : l'épieu (Pâshupata). Cet épieu, qui rend Arjuna invincible, est aussi appelé Tête-de-l'immensité. (Daniélou, mythes et dieux de l'Inde, Flammarion, 1992) La scène sculptée évoque un monde de forêts et de pâturages de l'Himalaya où Arjuna pratique son ascèse. La composition s'ordonne autour d'Arjuna et de Shiva. Des nagas, des divinités, des bergers, d'autres ascètes et de nombreux animaux les entourent. Un sanctuaire de montagne est également représenté.
