le dans les événements du quinzième siècle. Non-chalamment assise au bord du beau lac qui lui sert de miroir,Constance a perdu ses vastes proportions et son majestueuxéclat. Cest une reine déchue ; son front ne porte plus la cou-ronne, sa ceinture sest rétrécie; son manteau impérial, qui jadisse déroulait au loin dans la plaine, sest replié modestement surla rive et conserve à peine quelques vestiges de ses opulentesbroderies. Ainsi réduite et amoindrie, Constance semble méditer en si-lence sur son ancienne splendeur. Sa physionomie est empreintedune douce et mélancolique rêverie. La fortune, en lui ôtant sa-grandeur, lui a laissé sa grâce, son sourire, ses attraits naturelset le charme de sa délicieuse situation. Autrefois on ladmirait,maintenant elle plaît. On aime à rêver avec elle sur les capricesdu destin et les révolutions des âges, en la voyant telle quelle estet en songeant à ce quelle fut au temps du fameux concile quidonna tant de relief à son nom.

Chaquejour amenait de nouveaux hôtes illustres, déployant une magni-ficence extraordinaire. Pour mettre le comble à cette imposanteréunion, lempereur et le pape se présentèrent escortés de touteleur cour. Jamais spectacle plus splendide ne vint frapper lesregards dun peuple étonné. Puis, lorsque cette pompe se fut étalée à loisir, lorsque lesbarons et les comtes, les prélats et les princes, le pape et lempe-reur, eurent fait leur entrée solennelle et rempli la ville de luxeet de fanfares, deux hommes arrivèrent, dont la présence éclipsatoutes ces splendeurs.
