´côté, et tout en mettant la cité en état de défense, on établit un vaste
camp retranché dont la droite, avec Bougainville, s'appuie à la rivière
Saint-Charles et la gauche, avec Lévis, à l'étroite rivière de Montmo-
rency; Vaudreuil et Montcalm ont leur quartier général au centre, au
village de Beauport. La flotte anglaise arrive fin juin devant Québec et
l'armée prend position sur trois points, de l'autre côté de la rivière Mont-

â morency, dans l'îsle d'Orléans et, en face Québec, sur la pointe Lévis.
De ce dernier poste, et en même temps que les canons des navires, des
batteries bombardent pendant deux mois la noble cité qui est en grande

brûler les maisons et les fermes ; certains de ses soldats (rangers) scaipent
des Canadiens à la manière des sauvages, tuent des enfants prisonniers,
brûlent vifs des enfants et des femmes. Après un mois d'attente, il se dé
cide à attaquer le camp près de la chute de Montmorency. Le 31 juillet,
par un gué de la rivière, il lance une partie de ses troupes à l'assaut des
retranchements tandis que d'autres débarquent sur la berge sous la pro-
tection de la flotte. Le feu des Canadiens décime les assaillants; Montcalm
accourt avec des renforts; un gros orage précipite la retraite de l'armée
anglaise. La victoire de Montmorency relève nos espérances.

Malheureusement, tandis que Bourlamaque reculant pas à pas retar-
dait la marche du général Amherst et l'oblige a hiverner plus en arrière,
la voie des grands lacs est ouverte à l'ennemi par la trahison de nos alliés
