Description

L'église du Saint Pouvoir a été érigé au XVIe siècle, l’édifice repose vraisemblablement sur les fondations de lieux de culte plus anciens. Elle est aujourd'hui recouverte par un immeuble moderne.

À l’origine administrée par le Monastère du Pentélique, cette église servit notamment de manufacture de munitions pendant la Révolution de 1821 pour soutenir officiellement les troupes turques et officieusement les armées de la résistance.

Dans les années 1950, le modeste monument voit s’ériger dans sa proximité immédiate l’imposant ex-Ministère de l’Éducation, aux lourds piliers de béton et aux multiples bâtiments annexes, construit selon les plans de l’architecte grec Patroklos Karadinos.

Elle est aujourd'hui dans un quartier très dense avec de nombreux hôtels et restaurants, à 200 m de la place Syntagma. Elle est très fréquenté par les fidèles.
