English: Statues on Easter Island, 18th-century engraving. Discovered in 1721 by the Dutchman Jacob Roggeveen, monumental statues set into the earth on Easter Island seem to symbolize a secret of eternity. To this day, the wooden tablets and the stones, with over five hundred different signs carved by the same hands that erected the statues, remain unintelligible. — Illustration in the book Writing: The Story of Alphabets and Scripts (p. 127) by Georges Jean, translated by Jenny Oates, “Abrams Discoveries” series, 1992.
