| Description |
English: Kyloag Chambered Cairn Kyleoag chambered cairn is about 5000 years old, and is like most of the cairns that are dotted all around Sutherland, but having said that I thought that this one was in fairly good shape and if it is of interest to you then it is worth the wee walk up from the road.
The path leading up to the cairn is marked by a post and a small notice tells you which way to go, the land owner has placed a gate to allow access to the site and just request that you stick to the path. Although the top of the Chamber has collapse the rest of it is in good shape, the chamber is thought to have been built by the people that would have farmed the area and could have been used for religious purposes, it is believed that it could have been used as a burial site for the whole community for over 1500 years, the cairn was finally abandoned around 2000 BC. The chamber would have been entered by means of a passageway from the side leading into the centre, you can still see the lintel stone crossing the passageway. |
