Summary
[edit]Kurtzke map of MS in Scandinavia showing the Fennoscandian MS focus. The work of JF Kurtzke is in the public domain, as the authot specifically stated in the journal Neuroepidemiology 8 2008;31:1–9, where Kurtzke indicates: " These works were based on his detailed review and analysis of the clinical records of patients in 3 VA Hospitals, the first that in the Bronx, N.Y., then that in Coatesville, Pa., and lastly that in Washington, D.C. All these activities were performed while the author was a fulltime employee of the Department of Medicine and Surgery in these VA institutions. As such, he was considered ‘on duty’ and available at all hours and on all days (perhaps the origin of the cliché ‘24/7’?). Accordingly, the products of this endeavor are the property of the US Federal Government, and, as such, the author had been informed that they could not be copyrighted by any person, institution or organization – at least in the United States. Rather, they are in the public domain available without charge for use by anyone. The author has never received any financial remuneration in any form for the use of these materials."
