Description |
Svenska: KRUKA. Cizhou-typ. English: This handsome jar has three lobed panels round the body, painted in a free-flowing, calligraphic style, and depicting a tiger; a scholar standing beside a chess board; and a pair of cranes. All of these are popular motifs symbolising protection against disease and evil; scholarly attainment; and long life. During the Ming period Cizhou kilns in north China made everyday household vessels, better quality wares such as this jar targeting the well-to-do. The best pieces were even sent to court as cooking vessels, wine crocks, jugs, bottles and cisterns, i.e. durable but decorative items for royal kitchens and store rooms. |
