Description
Zahrtmann had been at Tivoli, outside Rome on a Palm Sunday and seen boys waiting to go inside to get olive branches blessed. He wanted to recreate the scene in front of the Santo Stefano in Civita d'Antino, and hired 18 boys to do the posing. The painting was done in 1883, and apparently it was a succes, so he did an almost identical copy - this one - in 1884.
