Description
English: The former S.H. Kress Building. 706 West Main Street. Designed by company architect Edward Sibbert and built in 1930 by the Tampa, Florida-based G.A. Miller Inc. who were responsible for the construction of numerous Kress stores across the country. Spokane's $350,000 store, which officially opened for business on April 11, 1931, was classified by Kress as a Super-A store, only the fifth built by the chain, putting it on par with their high volume New York store.


In later years the struggling Kress company, following shoppers' flight to the suburbs, closed the Spokane store on January 13, 1969 and in 1974 the building was incorporated into the new River Park Square mall, where it has had several awkward alterations made in recent decades including a sky bridge puncturing the façade. The ground floor is currently occupied by The North Face.
