[edit]DescriptionKoropisz, Self-portrait (2019) oils on canvas, 105cm x 90cm.jpg |
English: In this portrait, Koropisz portrays himself in the same pose as his idol, the Baroque composer G.F. Handel (1685-1759). Handel is shown composing in the manner on two occasions; the first in a portrait by Phillip Mercier c.1730 and secondly in a sculpture by Louis Francouis Roubiliac, located in Westminster Abbey.
As in Handel's portrait, Koropisz is sat at his harpsichord and appears to be writing music. The music which he is composing is an aria from the 'Messiah' (1742), considered to be one of Handel's finest works. The words read, "I know that my redeemer liveth and that he shall stand on the latter day upon the earth". This is a symbol of Koropisz's Christian beliefs. The painting is quite humorous, as Koropisz is not actually admiring Handel's work, but rather rewriting it, with the hope of doing a better job. Koropisz is known for his extravagant taste in Victorian fashion and here he wears his tailored velvet robe with silk lapels and a night shirt. |
