Description

At Uiwang Rail Museum, visitors are encouraged to do trainspotting, as the main Seoul-Busan rail line passes just outside. I decided to give it a try - my first and only trainspotting session.

I spot an electric locomotive on a dry run. That is the 8000 Series, built by an Alstom-led consortium. It was introduced into service on the Jungang Line in the mountainous east, on South Korea's only electrified rail line, in 1973. Its top speed is limited to 85 km/h, but its hill climbing abilities are extraordinary.

Now that more South Korean rail lines are electrified, including this line and most other major trunk lines, that old locomotive is seeing more uses. Korail has also acquired more up-to-date electric locomotives as well; newer ones are faster and can also pull passenger trains.
