[edit]DescriptionKorail 3100 Series Diesel Locomotive - Flickr - skinnylawyer.jpg |
Locomotive 3102 was part of the 3100 Series, which was manufactured by Alco in the US and introduced into Korail service in 1959. Its top speed is 105 km/h, or 65 mph. South Korea started running diesel locomotives at the end of the Korean War, when the United Nation Command left some surplus diesel locomotives behind. Starting in February 1960, Korail 3100 Series launched a new express service, Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon) class, making the Seoul-Busan trip (approximately 400 kilometers or 250 miles) in 6 hours and 30 minutes, an improvement of 30 minutes over previous trains. The first steam-powered trains in 1905 had required 14 hours to make the same trip. By the 1980s the trip was further shortened to 4 hours and 10 minutes, and a new high-speed line has further shortened the trip to just over two hours. |
