Summary
[edit]DescriptionKorail 3000 Series Subway Train - Flickr - skinnylawyer.jpg |
English: This is Anguk Station on Line 3 of the Seoul Subway system, where I have just alighted to explore some small private museums in the area.
Although most of Line 3 is managed by city-owned Seoul Metro, Korail does run a small portion in Ilsan District, City of Goyang, to the northwest outside Seoul city limits. As a result, a small number of trains on Line 3 are from Korail rather than Seoul Metro. This departing train, which I had arrived in, is a Korail example, even though it will terminate at Gupabal Station and therefore its run is solely on Seoul Metro tracks. The Korail portion of Line 3 is the only electrified Korail line that uses 1,500V DC for power, just like Seoul Metro's lines. As a result, Line 3 trains do not require dual-voltage capability their Line 1 and 4 counterparts require. And as a result, Korail 3000 Series is a DC-only model, and is built to Seoul Metro specifications and is maintained at a Seoul Metro yard; it is identical to subway trains Seoul Metro acquired in the 1990s. In 2008, Seoul Metro's own Line 3 trains were an aging 1984-vintage British model from the line's 1985 opening. (The Korail extension dates from 1994.) After I left Seoul, Line 3 started introducing brand-new trains similar to those on Line 2, and Seoul Metro's old trains were mostly retired by 2010. |
