Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1786 as the Orthodox chapel of the Quarantine by the merchant and soap producer from Zemun, Teodor Toša Apostolović, it is single-nave church in form of a Greek cross with two-storey belfry. It was designed in baroque style and its plan underlines the specific function of a quarantine church. The spaces of the western part, closed to the nave, were intended for the travellers in quarantine. Beside its visual, spatial and historic values, the church is also important as one of the two preserved building of the former Quarantine, founded in 1730, a strategic economic and sanitary institution of Zemun, located then on the borderline between the two empires. The iconostasis was painted by the icon painters from Zemun, Dimitrije Bratoglić and Konstantin Lekić. The inventory of movable objects contains valuable paintings from the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries.
