Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Bovidae; Genus: Alcelaphus; Genus species: Alcelaphus buselaphus cokii. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 2.1 m; Height: 1.2 m; Weight: 120-150 kg; Identification: The kongoni has a sandy fawn coat color, a white or pale rump, and a dark fringe on its tail. Unlike most horned-animals, both sexes have horns; Habitat: Grassy plains, open scrublands, lightly wooded areas; Diet: Herbivore: leafy parts of plants; Reproduction: Breeding takes place year-round with peaks of births in the dry seasons. Gestation lasts eight months. The single calf is weaned at four months of age; Social Structure: Young males lead groups of females with their young. They may form herds of hundreds in the dry season. Bachelor groups of up to 30 are also common; Behavior: Males defend their territories from elevated areas, such as termite mounds. Kongoni are a relatively peaceful species; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Lions, hyenas, hunting dogs, leopards, and cheetahs feed on kongoni.
