Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Konark Sun Temple:

The Konark Sun temple is famous temple built in India. It is located on the coastline in the state of Odisha . It was built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I. The temple was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. The word 'Konark' is a combination of two Sanskrit words kona (angle) and arka (sun). It thus implies that the main deity was the sun god and the temple was built in an angular format.

For construction of the temple 1,200 workers were employed for 12 years. The head architect Bisu Moharana's son, constructed the cupola of the temple which the workers were unable to complete and then immolated himself by jumping into sea for the sake of saving lives of 1,200 workers who were on the risk of being killed, if the king comes to know of their failure to complete the work.

The architecture of Sun Temple has all the defining elements of the Kalinga architecture – it includes Shikhara (crown), Jagmohana (audience hall), Natmandir (dance hall), and Vimana (tower). The temple attracts thousands of tourists every day and is being well-maintained by the local government.
