Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Drawing of an aluminum-vane or Kolbe electrometer (electroscope), a precision form of gold-leaf electroscope, from an early 20th century scientific equipment catalog. This detected electric charge using a thin flat aluminum vane hanging next to a flat vertical metal plate. When an electrostatic charge was applied to the top terminal, the vane and plate received the same charge, causing the vane to be repelled and pivot away from the plate (shown) due to the Coulomb force. The magnitude of the charge could be calculated from the scale.
