Title
Knife end-cap
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy knife end-cap of early post-Medieval date (c. 1500-c. 1600). The end-cap resembles a claw-hammer. However, it may, in fact, be a stylised dog’s head, a popular design for an end-cap of this period. The base is oval in cross-section. On the underside there is just the slight remains of the slot for the tang which is largely obscured by iron staining.

The surface colour is dull reddish brown overlain with superficial copper alloy corrosion products. There are flecks of a dark green patina.

12.4 x 18.5 x 9.0mm. Weight: 7.67g.

Two similar end-caps feature in Read's ‘Metal Artefacts of Antiquity’ (2001, p. 89, refs: 663 and 664).
