Title |
knee buckle |

Description |
English: Cast copper alloy trapezoidal shoe or knee buckle with concave sides, an internally bevelled inside edge and widened exterior edges to each loop, and nine moulded transverse ridges on either side of the spindle hole which has been drilled into the frame. The spindle, chape and pin are all missing, but there are areas with iron corrosion around the spindle hole and where the pin would have rested suggesting that the spindle and pin were made of iron. The dark green patina survives well on all surfaces, and there are areas of black lacquer, which was used to protect the copper alloy beneath (Whitehead, 1996, 8).
Whitehead (1996) illustrates similar buckles with transverse ridges on page 99, Nos.620 & 626, which are dated from c.1660-1720. |
