| Description |
At first there was a late Saxon building with a western tower which was enlarged for incorporation into the monastery of Heynings Priory circa 1330. The building today was originally part of a larger church, with a chancel and choir, both of which have been demolished. There is nothing left of the original tower, apart from traces on the west wall of the church. Therefore most of the original fabric dates from the 14th century. In the 16th century when the nunnery was dissolved the church fell into decay. Around the year 1630 a major reconstruction took place. The body of the church was rearranged to form a Chapel, the roof was reordered and an internal arcade was built which divides the nave in two. A false ceiling and new internal furnishings were installed. A further restoration was done in 1893, and again in 1937. Therefore the inside of the church now consists of a single space, with a transverse three arch arcade, altar with baldacchino, pulpit with tester, pews and font. The pews date from the early 17th century with fleur-de-lis poppy heads. The font is from the 14th century and is decorated with friezes of heads. There is a small organ, and one panel of stained glass on the south side. |
