Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Klipfel-English House, 83 Harvard Place, Buffalo, New York, October 2021. Built in 1894, this well-worn yet still handsome residence bears all the hallmarks of the then-trendy Queen Anne style of architecture: the amply-proportioned front-gable roof with Palladian window centrally situated on the façade, the shed-roofed front porch, and - of course - the corner tower are all characteristic. The latter feature is due a closer look; it's divided into three clear levels, each slightly narrower than the other and separated by flared shingling with barely conspicuous dentil rows beneath, and topped consecutively with a conical shingle roof and metal finial. The house was built to be the home of George Klipfel (1848-1925), a prominent vinegar manufacturer who was in business with his brother William, but he only lived in it for two years. Much longer-tenured was subsequent owner Henry English (1840-1905), the co-owner (with John P. Irish) of the cleverly named Irish & English furniture and carpet store on Washington Street downtown. Henry and his wife Adella (1841-1914) both resided at the address until their respective deaths.
