Kites - PERLINSON CARRYING KITES; CAMP DEVENS, AYER, MASS (English)
Original Caption: PERLINSON CARRYING KITES; CAMP DEVENS, AYER, MASS. The Signal Corps making observations and pictures of barrage fire in the Perlinson carrying kite, the Hexagon type, 12 ft. square, is for light winds, the style with the hole in it is the storm kite used in high winds and has great lifting power. These are made in sizes from 6 to 12 ft. The sizes used in the picture are from 9 to 12 ft. In flying a line of observation kites to lift a man, a group of pilot kites are first sent up several thousand ft. to get the high currents of air. From three to five above the lifting kites which are close together just over the seat of the operator. The pilot kites lift the group of lifting kites to the required height so they will get the wind to carry the observer. The rope used in 3/4" Manila. Twenty men are needed to hold the line. The wood in the kites is from selected spruce like aeroplanes and is very light. The cloth is canvas. Photographer: International Film Service (English)
