| Description |
English: Kirkstall Forge Milepost, Abbey Road, Kirkstall. This very old milepost claims to be equidistant between London and Edinburgh, and a rough check on my road atlas confirms that it is halfway, and probably on the direct line. I'd put the total distance between them at around 375 miles. Perhaps a geographer with better facilities and techniques could check the information !
B & B stands for Beecroft and Butler who were the owners of the forge in 1829 (thanks to Alan Longbottom for that information). See a photo from 1950 on the Leodis website http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=3062&DISPLAY=FULL |
