Description
English: The great feasts of the church year. Karelian 18th century icon. Tempera, wood (47 x 38.8 cm). Orthodox Church Museum, Kuopio.
Suomi: Kirkkovuoden suuret juhlat. Kirkkovuoden pääjuhlista ylösnousemus, pääsiäinen on kaksiosaisena tapahtumana keskellä suurimmassa kuvakentässä. Kristuksen ylösnousemus on juhlista merkittävin , mitä selittää keskeisen paikan. Ylösnousemuskuvassa on alempana tavanomainen ylösnousemusteema, joka idän kirkon ikonografiassa on Jeesuksen tuonelassa käynti. Ylemmässä kuvassa on länsimaisesta ikonografiasta omaksuttu pääsiäisteema eli Jeesuksen tuleminen ylösnouseena hautaholvista esiin.

Muut 12 juhlaa ovat pienemmissä mutta keskenään suunnilleen samasuuruisissa kentissä. Kuvien järjestys poikeeaa tavanomaisesta, sillä yleensä Neitsyt Marian syntyminen kuva on vasemmassa yläkulmassa, jossa tässä ikonissa on helluntain juhlaikoni eli kolmen enkelin vierailu Abrahamin ja Saaran luona Mamren tammistossa. Seuraavina onkin Marian syntymä ja siitä myötäpäivään lukien Marian temppeliin tuominen, Jeesuksen kirkastus, Pyhän Ristin ylentäminen, Marian kuolonuneen nukkuminen, Jeesuksen taivaaseen astuminen, ratsastus Jerusalemiin, Jeesuksen kaste ja Jeesuksen syntymä.

Karjalaisen kansanomaisen tyylitradition edustajaksi tämä Itä-Karjalasta peräisin oleva ikoni soveltuu erinomaisesti pelkistetyn, lähes luonnosmaisen esitystavan johdosta. Tapahtumat on kuvattu mahdollisimman vähillä henkilöhahmoilla ja miljöö viitteellisesti. Myös eloissa väritys oranssin, ruskean er sävyjen, luonnonvalkean ym. johdosta liittää tämän ikonin karjalaisten kansanmestarien työtapoihin. 1700-luku. Tempera, puu (47 x 38,8 cm).
