sing Old and New Monkland, Cadder andKirkintilloch parishes. Ere long, however, it was connectedwith the Garnkirk and Glasgow railway to the west; theBallochney railway to the east; the Wishaw and Coltnessrailway and Monkland canal to the south; and the Forthand Clyde canal to the north-west. All these railways andcanals now belong to the North British and CaledonianRailway Companies. The opening of this Monklandand Kirkintilloch railway gave an immediate impetus tothe development of minerals along its route; and manyproprietors of barren acres became rich—the town ofCoatbridge was also by its means stimulated, in the earlygrowth of that prosperity which it has since attained. It has been a successful line, as may be seen from theincreasing revenue, viz.— 1828, - i:2,837 13 II 1835, - ^6,260 3 9 1829, 3.450 5 0 1S36, 6,792 II II 1830, 3.538 4 I 1837, 7,203 I 9 IS3I, 3,602 I 6 1S38, 11.172 18 0 1832, 3.278 I 4 1839, 13,985 10 6 1833, 4,578 15 8 1S40, ■ 16,991 3 7 1834, 5,oSi 17 3
