| Description |
The church is not mentioned in the Domesday book, but there is evidence of a church here around 1160. There is a western tower, nave and chancel. The lower half of the tower and the chancel date from the early 13th century. The tower was extended in 15th century and the present parapet and battlements were added. The chancel has a 14th century east window with asymmetrical lights. There are two tombs to John and Margaret Wildbore, dating from the 14th century. Margaret's tomb has been moved to the north side of the chancel which places it in front of a double piscina. The nave originally had north and south aisles, and in the 16th century the church was in a poor state and in need of attention. However it was not until the 1780s that the two aisles were demolished and the nave rebuilt and appeared much as it does today, apart from a gallery at the west end which was later removed. Once again the church fell into a bad state of repair, even to the point of proposed demolition. However,further restoration occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries There is an 18th century font, and a Georgian Royal coat of arms. There is a small organ and no stained glass. |
