| Description |
English: Kinlochquoich The site of the lodge at the end of the natural Loch Quoich. The modern hydro electric loch extends further to the west, crossing the watershed. Kinlochquoich was the centre of a network of fine pony paths, many of which are still maintained and used by the estate. They get in by boat now.
The main claim to fame is that this is reputed to be Britain's wettest place. One notable day in 1916 saw over 200mm of rain here. Even normal conditions frequently render the burns uncrossable. Often, standing in sunshine in lower Glen Garry you can see the rain falling here. This phenomenon is better known in Glen Morriston to the north where it is called the "Cluanie Curtain" It is orographic rainfall, caused by moist air forced to rise, and hence cool by the 1000m coastal mountain range. I was to enjoy a lot of orographic rainfall on this trip. |
