Summary
[edit]DescriptionKindley Field Bermuda.jpg |
English: The main runway of the Bermuda International Airport, looking South-Eastward from Ferry Reach. The house in the foreground was built by Vincent Astor. The airport was built during the Second World War as a joint United States Army Air Forces/Royal Air Force base. Built by the US Army, it was originally known as Kindley Field (although the initial installation by the US Army was Fort Bell, which oversaw the completion of the airfield, and then continued in operation adjacent to it). The RAF withdrew after the War. in 1948, following the separation of the US Army Air Forces from the US Army to form the US Air Force, the base was re-named Kindley Air Force Base. It was turned over to the US Navy in 1970, which renamed it NAS Bermuda, although it continues to be known popularly as Kindley Field. The Bermuda Government operated a Civil Air Terminal from the former RAF side of the airfield. After the closure of the US bases in Bermuda in 1995, the Bermuda Government took over complete operation and renamed the field the Bermuda International Airport. |
