Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Kilpatrick Tunnel east portal, Inishannon, Co.Cork. After negotiating a rock cutting south of Upton, the Cork Bandon & South Coast Railway bridged the Brinny River passed through the short Kilpatrick Tunnel and bridged the Bandon River. This is the east portal of the tunnel. This main line 5'3" gauge railway ran from Cork (Albert Quay) to Bantry. There were a number of branch lines, to Kinsale (closed in the 1930s), to Skibbereen & Baltimore, to Clonakilty & Courtmacsherry and to Kinsale). There was also a narrow gauge connection from Skibbereen to Schull which closed in the 1940s. The rest of the network closed in March 1961 despite much opposition and acrimony and despite previous political promises to the contrary. The loss is still felt today.
