Description
English: Killydonnell Friary Looking north-east; the notice reads, "KILLYDONNELL FRIARY

Founded in 1471 by the O'Donnells for the Franciscan Friars on the site of an older church erected by the O'Tonners. In 1559, Calvagh O'Donnell and his wife were captured here and carried off into captivity by Shane, the Proud O'Neill, on 23rd September,1592. Neal O'Boyle Bishop of Raphoe, held a Chapel here. The building and lands were granted at the Plantation, in 1603, to Captain Basil Brooke. The ruins consist of a church, with southern transcept containing two Alter recesses in the east wall extending north from the Church are the barrel-vaulted domestic buildings, one of which has been converted into a family vault of the Stewart family. -
