Summary
[edit]DescriptionKillpecker Sand Dunes (Leucite Hills, north of Rock Springs, Wyoming, USA) 27 (48921609907).jpg |
The Killpecker Sand Dunes are located in the northern Leucite Hills area of southwestern Wyoming. The wind-blown sediments here, referred to as "eolian" by geologists, are dominated by well rounded to subrounded quartz sand grains, plus minor mafic and lithic grains. The Killpecker Dune Field ranges from being partially vegetated to nonvegetated. The name is in reference to natural saltpeter in a nearby creek, which is traditionally used as a male anaphrodisiac in humans. Most modern discussions assert that this is a myth. However, I've yet to see an assertion like that accompanied by a citation to an actual study or scientific evidence. So, . . . The sand in the dune field is principally derived from weathered and eroded sandstone outcrops in the Laney Member of the Green River Formation (Eocene). The curvilinear ridges are asymmetrical ripple marks, which form in a one-directional current by wind or water - in this case, wind. Locality: ~3 miles ~north of Chilton Road (Sweetwater County Road 17), Killpecker Sand Dunes (Killpecker Dune Field), southeast of the town of Farson & east-southeast of the town of Eden, northwestern Sweetwater County, southwestern Wyoming, USA (41° 59' 00.11" North latitude, 109° 09' 20.72" West longitude) |
