English: Killamarsh Central Railway Station Killamarsh, North-east Derbyshire Killamarsh Central Station was one of three stations serving the village, all within close proximity of each other. Opened in 1892 by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and known simply as “Killamarsh”, it was renamed Killamarsh Central by British Railways in 1950 because it was the centre of the three stations, as well as being on the old Great Central Main Line which ran between London Marylebone and Manchester via Sheffield Victoria. The station, which had two platforms interconnected by a footbridge, closed in 1963 and the trackbed now forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail north-south section from Leeds to Chesterfield. The extant West platform is still accessible, and the footbridge and stairway leading down to the West platform remain open to the public, providing access to the Trans Pennine Trail from Station Road. The stairway to the East platform and the platform itself are both now inaccessible. The other two stations were “Killamarsh West” on the former Midland Railway "Old Road" from Chesterfield to Rotherham Masborough and “Upperthorpe and Killamarsh” on the former LD&ECR's Beighton Branch. |
