Summary

Description

Kilfenora Cathedral, County Clare, Ireland

English: East face of the shaft of Doorty's Cross. Liam de Paor gave following description: “[..] two more ecclesiastics are depicted, side by side, occupying the full width of the cross-shaft. Both wear hoods which frame their faces and garments reaching to below the knee, and each holds a staff with both hands, although the left arm of the dexter figure is linked with the right arm of the sinister figure. [..] Below these figures there is a strange and puzzling scence. Two human heads are shown, each accompanied by an arm bent at the elbow and holding in the hand what seems to be a money-bag. There are two other objects, one apparently a human foot, the other, between the two heads, a disembodied arm or leg. A large bird perches on the heads and pecks at the face of one, like the carrion fowl which devours the headless body in the Ahenny funeral scence.” De Paor, Liam. 1955. “The Limestone Crosses of Clare and Aran”.
