Summary

Description

Kilfenora Cathedral, County Clare, Ireland

English: Head of Doorty's Cross, depicting a bishop with his crozier and two birds sitting on the shoulders. After the cross was restored in 1955, it was erected in the graveyard west of the cathedral. At that location this side was facing east. Recently, this cross was moved into the north wing of the cathedral where it is now protected by a glass roof. Due to this move, however, the cross has been turned by 180 degrees, i.e. the bishop is now on the side facing west, no longer east. The original orientation is not known. The literature refers to the former orientation. See, for example, De Paor, Liam. 1955. “The Limestone Crosses of Clare and Aran”. Journal of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society 26 (3/4). Galway Archaeological & Historical Society: 53–71. https://www.jstor.org/stable/25550084.
