| Description | Kilauea Point Light Station in Kilauea, HI (1913). The lighthouse was built as a navigational aid for ships seeking Honolulu. Originally painted grey, the lighthosue was built with reinforced concrete due to earthquake concerns. In 1927, Lester J. Maitland and Albert F. Hegenberger identified the lighthouse during the first trans-Pacific flight on the Bird of Paradise. Intending to land in Oahu, the plane would have been lost if the plane was any farther north. It was manned until 1974. The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1985 to preserve the surrounding bird habitat. |
