Recovered Jain statues

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Khandargiri Jain monuments in Chanderi are six groups of rock-cut monuments in Madhya Pradesh. They are sometimes spelled as Khandagiri Jain caves of Chanderi, but they should not be confused with the ancient Jain caves with the same name near Bhubaneswar.

The notable Jain sculpture at this site includes a colossal deep bas-relief of Adinatha, which towers to about 45 feet. On each side of the Adinatha, monuments of the two sects of Jains are split over the hills, the older ones of Digambara. These are in excavated caves. All of these were built in stages between the 13th and 19th-century. Some were restored in recent decades.

The site also has recovered statues of Jain ruins, damaged during the Mughal era persecution.
