Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Mandapa is any pillared hall, usually with square plan, where the visitors and pilgrims or family gathers. It serves as the waiting area, as well the space that often connects the circumambulation passage around the sanctum. It usually has carvings and friezes on pillars, walls and ceiling. These are rich in symbolism, often narrate myths, fables and legends from Hindu texts as well secular scenes such as musicians, sculptures of single women or men, or amorous couples (mithuna). The space may display sculptures of various deities such as those from Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism and Saurism traditions of Hinduism.
